Reduce Allergy Symptoms with these Home Heating Tips

Home | Blog | Published on July 20th, 2021

If you suffer from indoor allergens it can seem like there is no break all year round. In fact, the dry winter air may exasperate your allergy symptoms making them worse and making it hard to get relief.

Winter allergens may include things inside your home such as pet dander, dust mites, dry air and dust buildup. When it comes to heating your home, there are some things you can do during the colder months to reduce allergy symptoms, helping you get some relief.

Tips for Reducing Allergens this Winter

  • The number one thing you can do to reduce allergy symptoms is to have a heating system that has a built-in air purifier installed. This will help filter out allergens before they enter your home and will also help circulate the air in your home, reducing indoor allergens. If you’re not in need of a new furnace you may want to consider buying one or two portable air purifiers for your home.
  • If you notice that more dust is building up around your home, it may be time to have your furnace checked. Older furnaces have more trouble filtering the air and can cause excess dust to start building up inside your home.
  • A clean filter is also important. A dirty filter will restrict new filtered air from entering your home, leaving your home feeling stale and the air stagnant.
  • Turning your thermostat down can also help. Constantly running your heating dries the air out. This dry air can lead to sneezing, watery or dry eyes, and sore and swollen nasal pages.
  • Have a whole house humidifier installed, a humidifier can keep the humidity levels in your home comfortable through the winter months, adding much-needed moisture and reducing the chance of eye and nose irritation. Too much moisture is rarely a problem in the winter months when your heating system is running, however if you have mold build-up in your home you may want to invest in a dehumidifier instead.
  • Having your vents cleaned can also control allergens entering your home. Dirt, dust, pollen, and dander can build up in your homes vents and then be blown straight into the home. Regular vent cleaning can help prevent this build up from occurring.
