How Does Geothermal Energy Work to Heat and Cool Your Home?

Looking for a way to heat and cool your home that can save you money, help the environment, and run both quietly and effectively? You may want to consider geothermal cooling and heating.

Geothermal can do all of the above and more, but can be a bit hard to understand if you don’t know the basic mechanics of the system. So how exactly do geothermal systems work to help keep your home cool? Keep reading to find out!

The Geothermal Cooling Process

Geothermal uses the natural temperature from deep below the ground to draw heat out and cool your home in the summer. It then does the reverse in winter, drawing heat from the ground and pumping that warmer air it into your home.

When used as a cooling source the pump draws the hot refrigerant from the system out of the compressor and sends this air deep underground. When this air gets underground the heat is absorbed into the ground. This helps cool the refrigerant, which is then sent back through the air handler and pumped into your home. This natural process helps keep your home comfortable during the summer months and is of most use in mild climates.

A geothermal system looks much like a gas furnace on the outside. A small box is installed, and this box houses the refrigeration system that helps to convert the air pulled from the earth’s surface. In most cases, your home’s existing ducts can be used to distribute the cooled air throughout your home. In order to get the most out of a geothermal system, all ducts need to be clean and sealed correctly.

Why Choose Geothermal Cooling

While installing a geothermal system may seem expensive at the beginning, you can see a return on this initial investment within 5 – 10 years. A geothermal system can reduce your energy costs by up to 70 percent, and most systems have a lifespan well over 20 years. Geothermal systems can also help reduce humidity levels in your home.

If you are looking to help reduce your environmental footprint you will find that geothermal systems are the most environmentally-friendly cooling and heating system.
