After all, they pretty much take care of themselves, right? Well, unfortunately that’s not really the case. While this ‘plug and go’ mindset may be easy, the certified electricians at Jack Lehr Heating, Cooling & Electric want our patrons to understand that outdated outlets can cost you in a number of ways. Outdated outlets can cost you money, they can cost you time, and they carry the potential to cost you your property.

When Is it Important to Upgrade My Outlets?

We’ll skip the lectures and fear mongering, but there are some very clear signs that indicate a need for an outlet upgrade, and failure to do so might lead to some troubles! The signs are indicative of a few issues, but all of them boil down to the same point: If you notice any of these, it’s time for an upgrade:

Your outlets are ungrounded. Grounded outlets became the “code” standard in the 60s onward for all building projects. Unfamiliar with ungrounded outlets? They’re the ones that have only the two vertical slits, rather than grounded outlets that feature the slits plus the third semi-circular prong in the bottom center. While an ungrounded outlet isn’t immediately dangerous, they lack the fail-safes of grounded outlets, and are considerably less compatible with current technology. Failing to replace ungrounded outlets can lead to shorts, power surges, unnecessary breaker flips and potentially electrical fire.

Hot or sparking outlets. If your outlet is visibly sparking, you probably don’t need us to tell you it’s time for an outlet upgrade and replacement. The interesting bit is that outlets actually always spark. You’re just not supposed to be able to see it in a properly working outlet. If the spark is visible, or the outlet is warm to the touch, it indicates deteriorating wiring that can be very dangerous to your property and personal health.

Your outlets frequently cause breaker flips. Breakers are designed to flip when a circuit overloads, and are a safety feature. If your breaker flips too frequently, or any time you use a specific outlet, it’s indicative of outdated or damaged outlets or wiring. The issue may be with the breaker panel itself as well. Another reason to call on an electrician!

Modern Day Demands: Why Upgrading Is Important

Aside from obvious malfunction or damage, there are a number of reasons why upgrading your electrical is just a good idea in general. It’s important to note that technology evolves extremely rapidly, and an outdated home cannot take advantage of that tech effectively.

Without consistent upgrades, you may be paying more than you need to for inefficient energy use, or you might be stunting the effectiveness of your electricity. Older homes and electrical systems often host minimal amp capacity, meaning you could see flickering lights and power, frequent breaker flips and shorting appliances. Staying ahead of the curve will save stress and time in the future!

Superior Electrical Service in Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton and the Greater Lehigh Valley

At Jack Lehr, our specialists boast some of the best service, skill and technology in the industry!
